Acrylic or Polycarbonate? Choosing the Right Clear Sheet
They look identical on the rack and they are not remotely the same material. Picking the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake we see on clear jobs.
Somebody rings and asks for “a piece of clear plastic, about 6 mm”. That request could sensibly be answered with either acrylic or polycarbonate, and the two behave so differently in service that the choice is worth getting right before anything is cut.
The One Sentence Summary
Acrylic is harder, clearer, cheaper and machines to a lovely finish, but it is brittle. Polycarbonate is enormously tough and will take a hit that shatters acrylic, but it scratches easily, costs more and does not polish up the same way.
Where Acrylic Wins
Optical Clarity
Acrylic has slightly better light transmission than polycarbonate and, more noticeably, it stays clear. Polycarbonate has a faint colour cast that becomes obvious once you put the two sheets side by side, and it yellows more readily under long term UV exposure.
Edge Finish
This is the big one for display work. A routed acrylic edge can be flame or diamond polished until it looks like glass, which is what makes illuminated signage and display units look expensive. Polycarbonate does not flame polish — the edge stays matt.
Scratch Resistance
Acrylic is considerably harder on the surface. For a counter top display, a sneeze guard or anything that gets wiped down daily, that hardness translates directly into how long the part keeps looking new.
Cost
Sheet for sheet, acrylic is meaningfully cheaper. On a large job that difference is not trivial.
Where Polycarbonate Wins
Impact Strength
This is not a small margin. Polycarbonate absorbs impact that would crack acrylic outright, which is why it is the default for machine guarding, safety screens and anywhere a tool might be dropped or a component might come loose.
Cold Bending
Polycarbonate can be bent cold without cracking. Acrylic generally needs to be heated and line bent, which is an extra process and adds cost.
Temperature
Polycarbonate holds up better near heat. If the part sits close to a motor, a light fitting or an oven, that matters.

What We Would Choose for Common Jobs
- Machine guarding — polycarbonate, without hesitation.
- Retail display or POS unit — acrylic, for the edge finish and the price.
- Illuminated signage — acrylic, because the polished edge is doing the work.
- Counter screen in a busy public area — acrylic if it is protected, polycarbonate if it is exposed to knocks.
- Equipment window near heat — polycarbonate.
- Something that must not yellow outdoors for years — UV grade acrylic.
Two Things People Get Caught By
Cast versus extruded acrylic. Cast acrylic machines and polishes better and is more chemically resistant. Extruded is cheaper and has more consistent thickness. For anything with a visible cut edge, cast is worth the difference.
Protective film. Both materials arrive with a masking film. Leave it on through fabrication and installation, then peel it at the very end. Removing it early is how a brand new panel ends up with a scratch nobody can explain.
